Writing Desk and Sanity in Graveyard Keeper 2

Unlock the Writing Desk in the Theology branch and build it in the basement beneath your house; the hatch is beside the bed. Writing Stories consumes insanity, so a purple brain icon with a red cross usually means the Keeper is too sane. Full ordinary energy does not replace the required insanity resource.

How to unlock and use the Writing Desk

1. Open the house basement. Look for the hatch beside the bed. If it is still inaccessible, continue the early quest line; the cited reports do not establish one exact unlock quest.
2. Check the Theology technology branch. Unlock the Writing Desk technology when its requirements become available.
3. Build the desk downstairs. Use the basement construction interface and place it in an available work area.
4. Choose a Story recipe. Supply the ordinary ingredients shown in the interface and check the separate purple-brain requirement.
5. Bring enough insanity. If the red-cross brain icon remains, building again or restoring ordinary energy will not solve a missing-insanity requirement.

Sanity and insanity are not ordinary energy

Release-build players describe insanity as a resource spent by Story production. Sleeping is generally discussed as a way to recover sanity after the Tired state appears, so sleeping can move the Keeper in the opposite direction from what the Writing Desk requires. Save enough insanity before starting a writing session.

Practical check: read every icon in the recipe panel. If materials and energy are present but the purple brain remains crossed out, the missing requirement is the current insanity amount.

When it may be a bug

A launch-day player reported that the desk still refused to work after the displayed materials appeared available. First verify insanity rather than energy. If the requirement is met and the recipe still will not start, save and reload, then use the developer-monitored Bug Reports forum with the recipe, platform, and save state.
